The Ultimate Fire Door Safety Checklist

Fire doors are one of the most underrated components of a building’s fire safety strategy. These specially engineered doors help prevent the spread of fire and smoke, allowing time for evacuation and minimising damage. Yet, too often they’re left damaged, propped open, or poorly maintained.

At MAGG Fire Services, we perform regular fire door inspections for clients across Birmingham and the West Midlands. Here’s our ultimate checklist to ensure your fire doors are up to standard:

1. Certification

  • Check for a valid label or plug showing that the door is a certified fire door.

2. Gaps

  • Ensure gaps around the door frame are no more than 3-4mm. Larger gaps can allow smoke and fire to spread.

3. Seals

  • Intumescent seals (which expand under heat) should be intact and continuous around the frame.

4. Closers

  • All fire doors must have self-closing devices. Test that the door closes firmly and latches shut from any angle.

5. Hinges

  • Hinges should be firmly fixed with no missing or loose screws. Use metal fixings only.

6. Signage

  • Appropriate signage, such as “Fire Door Keep Shut,” must be clearly visible.

7. Free From Obstruction

  • Fire doors should never be wedged open or blocked. MAGG Fire Services often highlights this issue during summer months, when doors are left open for ventilation.

8. Damage Check

  • Look for signs of damage such as holes, warping, or broken glazing.
